BoardPromise

Keep your promise. Fulfill the board's.

BoardPromise is a free GiveIQ tool that maps board members' capabilities against an organization's strategic needs for the next four quarters, flags the gaps that term limits and missing skills will open, and drafts recruitment briefs. Leaders approve every action. Nothing is sent or decided automatically.

What is BoardPromise?

BoardPromise is a free GiveIQ tool that shows where a nonprofit board will be unable to govern what its strategy needs over the next four quarters.

You list your goals, the governance needs behind them, and each member's rated capability. BoardPromise shows each need by quarter, lets you test adding candidates or hypothetical roles, and turns the result into recruitment briefs for your board to approve.

How is board coverage calculated?

A need is covered in a quarter when at least two active members rate 2 or higher on it and at least one of them rates 3, meaning they can lead.

One qualified member makes it thin. No qualified members makes it a gap, unless someone active has not been rated, in which case it shows as not assessed. The full rules are on the methodology page.

How is this different from a board skills matrix?

A skills matrix is a snapshot of who knows what today. BoardPromise adds time: it applies term end dates, renewals, and onboarding to show coverage quarter by quarter.

It also ties each need to a strategic goal, keeps unrated skills visible as not assessed instead of counting them as zero, and never adds results into a single score.

What happens when board members term out?

From the quarter after a term ends without a renewal, that member stops counting toward coverage and seats, and any officer role they hold shows as open.

The role stays open until a member marked as ready for it is counted. Assumed renewals still count, but are labeled wherever a result depends on them.

How do the Five Ts apply to board recruitment?

Board members contribute Time, Talent, Treasure, Trust, and Thought. BoardPromise measures Talent through governance capabilities and tracks Treasure through give/get commitments.

A prospective donor's gift never counts as giving until it is pledged and recorded. Trust is recorded as evidence and is never scored.

Can I use BoardPromise in Claude or ChatGPT?

Not yet. A connector is planned so that Claude and ChatGPT can read your coverage and explain results using the same rules as the app.

When it ships, the assistant will be able to draft and explain only. Approving a plan will still happen in GiveIQ, by a named person.

Is my board's data private?

The public demo uses a fictional board and saves nothing. Accounts for your own board are not open yet.

When they open, each organization's records will be visible only to its own members, and members will see coverage labels, not each other's ratings.

What does it cost?

The demo is free and needs no account. Pricing for using BoardPromise with your own board has not been announced.
